That's an idea I hadn't even considered. I remember the Rockies tried piggyback starters a few years back and abandoned it pretty quickly. I'm not usually a fan of it at this level, but like you said--we're in a stage of evaluating plalyers, not trying to win a championship. With the glut of starters in play it might be the most effective way to do that.

It's uncommon, but not unheard of, to use or discuss split starts in the majors. It's pretty common in the minors. The Brewers are perfectly set up for this the 1st half of '17, in most's opinion in the evaluation phase rather than competing for a playoff spot. Davies and Guerra could be used conventionally, 6-7-8 innings, 100 pitches. Or Guerra could be on an 80 pitch, 5 inning limit. Peralta could join these 2 if effective early. That leaves 2 or 3 rotation slots that could be split, 5 innings for the starter, 4 for the
'long reliever". These 6 would come from Anderson, Garza and Nelson paired with Hader, Lopez and Guerra/Peralta. Ortiz and the unmentioned Woodruff are less seasoned options.
