Prospect of the Day: SS Gilbert Lara, AZL Brewers
When the Brewers inked Lara to a franchise-record $3.2M signing bonus last summer, the fan base oozed excitement and anxiously awaited his appearance in rookie ball. It’s only been four games, but he’s already begun to impress. The 17-year-old is hitting .412/.444/.647 with a pair of triples and only two strikeouts. And although he’s expected to move off shortstop as his body fills out, early reports have said that his throwing arm has already shown plus strength with no serious accuracy issues — meaning the arm seems to profile well at third. Lara impressed scouts in instructional ball last fall and has burst out of the gates well in his professional debut. He remains lightyears away from the big leagues, yet one of the most tantalizing prospects in the Brewers’ system.
