Prospect of the Day: SS Jake Gatewood, Helena
On draft day in 2014, the overwhelming opinion of Gatewood amongst scouts and draft experts was that the tools were loud but unplayable. He had too many approach issues, too many holes in his swing to access his raw power with any consistency. All of this was evident in A-ball; however, the 19-year-old has seemingly hit his stride with the Helena Brewers. He has seven doubles and a home run in his past 11 games. Eight of his 13 hits in the Pioneer League have gone for extra bases, which is hardly surprising. The California native won’t likely hit for average or be a singles hitter at any point in his career, but he possesses ample power.
Gatewood’s response to a mid-season demotion to Helena has to be precisely what the organization wanted. Instead of spiraling out of control due to failure, he has improved. In fact, he began turning it around in Appleton before being sent to the Pioneer League in mid-June. Most thought Monte Harrison would be the one performing well offensively in 2015; however, it’s Jake Gatewood who has made the first significant charge forward.
