Prospect of the Day: OF Carlos Belonis, Helena
When focusing on recent international signings, most Brewers fans immediately think of Gilbert Lara, Nicolas Pierre, and Franly Mallen. They all set franchise records for their bonuses on their respective signing dates; however, the Brewers quietly dropped $550k on shortstop (now outfielder) Carlos Belonis in 2012. The young man represented Milwaukee’s largest investment in the international market that cycle.
Hurt for the majority of the year in 2013, Belonis came stateside last year and hit a respectable .271/.314/.345 with 17 stolen bases as a 20-year-old. Nothing exciting, but it was encouraging after a lost season of development. Still, it became clear that he wasn’t going to stick defensively at shortstop and was going to need to hit for more power to carry his new outfield home. A total of 10 extra-base hits in 187 plate appearances wasn’t going to cut it.
In 2015, Belonis has taken his lumps, but seems to be catching fire as the season wears down. In the month of August, he’s hitting .375/.444/.625 with three doubles and three home runs — two of which have come in his last two games. His strikeout rate and massive struggles in July suggest the package is very raw. Still, an outfielder with seven homers and 16 stolen bases in less than 50 games is intriguing enough, especially for a bonus baby who netted over a half-million dollars just a few years ago. I’ll be looking forward to reports from instructionals this fall.
