Prospect of the Day: 2B Blake Allemand, Wisconsin
The 5-foot-10 infielder out of Texas A&M extended hit late-season hit streak to 11 games on Wednesday. In fact, he has logged at least one hit in 20 of his last 21 games — one of the biggest reasons why he has hit .333/.375/.438 with a pair of homers in the month of August.
A senior-sign in the fifth round of the 2015 Draft, Allemand immediately drew praise from media experts on the draft. People like Chris Crawford, Jim Callis, and Jonathan Mayo raved about the switch-hitters’s ability to barrel up the baseball, and the common consensus seemed to be that Allemand had big-league potential, even just on the bench or as a utility infielder. It took him about a month to acclimate to professional ball; however, his recent performance illustrates what he can bring to the organization. He has gap-to-gap power, decent plate discipline, and the ability to play all over the infield. It’s not sexy to suggest Allemand might have a Joe-Inglett-type upside, but it’s useful from a cheap senior sign in the middle rounds of the draft.
