Prospect of the Day: 1B/DH Tyrone Perry, AZL Brewers
Selected in the 14th round of the 2015 draft, Perry opted to forego his college commitment to Florida State and begin his professional career with the Brewers. (Bonus points if you can name the most-recent Brewers draftee to spurn a scholarship offer to Florida State.) At 6-foot-1 and 265 pounds, it’s easy to see that Perry’s entire value lies in his bat. He’ll be limited to first base, and even that will test his defensive development and his body maintenance. The young man has massive raw power to the pull side, but obvious holes in his swing that make the hit tool questionable as he rises through the ranks. Through his first three games, though, all is well. He’s hitting .444 with a pair of doubles.
NOTE: As mentioned on Monday, outfielder Trent Clark — the Brewers’ first-round draft pick in June — suffered a scary injury in which he collided head-first into the wall. After 15 minutes of laying on the field, he was carried off on a stretcher by medical professionals. Assistant GM Gord Ash confirmed on Monday that Clark avoided serious injury and had full movement of his neck and his extremities, which is wonderful news.
