Prospect of the Day: SS Jake Gatewood, Helena
After scuffling in Appleton with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Milwaukee Brewers demoted former supplemental-round pick Jake Gatewood to the Pioneer League. It’s obviously early; however, the returns have been positive for the 19-year-old slugger. He has collected five doubles thus far in seven games and has stolen a trio of bases. It should be noted, though, that the power/speed combination has never been questioned. Instead, scouts have almost universally panned his hit tool, which remains an issue. He struck out 35.3 percent of the time in A-ball and has 11 strikeouts in just seven games with Helena. The trick will be elevating his bat-to-ball skills enough to consistently tap into his prodigious power potential, and he has a long way to go on that front.
For more information on Gatewood and his early-season struggles, be sure to read Michael Schwarz’s article from Thursday. He spoke with the Brewers’ farm director, Reid Nichols, about Gatewood and Harrison, while providing a contextual framework through which to understand poor performances by 19-year-old kids in A-ball.
