Prospect of the Day: OF Demi Orimoloye, AZL Brewers
Between the two rookie-ball clubs in Helena and Arizona, the Brewers have a wealth of exciting talent. We’ve talked about Monte Harrison, Trent Clark, Gilbert Lara, Jake Gatewood, Marcos Diplan, and even someone like Tyrone Perry or Carlos Belonis; however, one of the highest-upside pieces in the AZL is the Brewers’ fourth-rounder Demi Orimoloye. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, he’s built like a prototypical right fielder, which is where he defensively profiles best in the long run. Prior to the draft, though, most scouts pegged Orimoloye as a guy who could potentially hit for average and plus-power down the road. It was just a disappointing 2015 prep season that dropped him further than expected on draft day, falling to the Brewers in the fourth.
Through his first 11 games, Orimoloye (pronounced “ORA-malloy”) is hitting .313/.340/.542 and has belted his first pair of professional home runs in the last two days. His rawness at the plate can be seen in his 14 strikeouts and zero walks in those same 11 games, but he’s also showing what he can do when he does make contact with the baseball. He has six extra-base hits and nine singles in 11 games. Orimoloye isn’t likely to be a fast-riser in the system. Brewers fans will have to remain patient — much like with Harrison and Gatewood in 2015 — but the potential payoff is there. It’s just going to take a long time and a lot of development to have a chance at it.
