Prospect of the Day: RHP Hiram Burgos, Colorado Springs
Burgos is 27 years old and signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers to provide innings to the Double-A and Triple-A clubs, but he was actually a fringe prospect a couple years ago. The right-hander started six games for the big-league club in 2013, posting a 6.44 ERA in 29.1 innings. Since then, he’s dealt with injuries and poor performance; however, Burgos has seemingly returned to form in 2015. He compiled a 3.68 ERA in Double-A and has since started eight games with a 3.32 ERA in Triple-A Colorado Springs — which is one of the most difficult pitching environments in the minors.
Because the Brewers have a surprising amount of depth in their minor-league pitching — with Tyler Cravy, Tyler Thornburg, and Tyler Wagner (which leaves one wondering if guys named Tyler is the new market inefficiency) waiting in the wings — Burgos doesn’t have much of a chance to make The Show in 2015. Still, it seems the Brewers brought him back to mentor younger pitchers in the minors and provide crucial innings. This summer, Burgos’s name resurfaced in stories about Jimmy Nelson’s new knucklecurve, as Burgos reportedly taught him the grip and how to throw it. The organization likes to keep those kinds of pitchers around — guys who are good teammates, love pitching, and regularly work with younger pitchers to improve their crafts. Burgos seems to be one of those guys. His quality performance is just icing on the cake.
