Prospect of the Day: RHP Jorge Lopez, Biloxi
The right-hander continues his brilliant season, tossing seven one-hit innings on Tuesday evening. He has particularly been on fire as of late. Lopez has compiled a 1.70 ERA over his last 10 starts (69.0 innings). In only one of those outings has he failed to go six innings, and even then, it was 5.2 innings against Montgomery on July 8th. Lopez has reportedly improved his command across the board. Southern League managers voted him as having the best curveball in the league, too, and it has been a banner season overall for the Puerto Rican native. I suspect that Brewers fans may see him on a Top 100 Prospect List or two before 2016, which would almost certainly give the club three prospects inside the league’s top 100. This farm system has improved dramatically over a short period of time, and it’s not simply due to the most recent trade deadline. The draft has helped, but an under-reported factor in the Brewers’ minor-league renaissance is the improvement — almost across the board — of its players who were already in the system prior to the 2014 season.
Holy Crap. Kiley McDaniel just said in his chat that Lopez is a top 50 prospect.
When you say “almost certainly gives them 3 in the top 100″, who are we talking about? Arcia, Phillips, and Lopez? What about Santana and Clark who are currently top 100 in mlb.com and having great seasons
This is a great question, as Clark completely skipped my mind — which is foolish of me. I meant Arcia, Phillips, and Lopez. I’d absolutely add Clark to that list. Maybe Santana makes the MLB.com Top 100; however, I don’t think you’ll see him on Baseball America or Baseball Prospectus’ list.
