Prospect of the Day: SS Luis Sardinas, Colorado Springs
The slick-fielding shortstop joined the Brewers organization in the Yovani Gallardo trade over the winter. He made a cameo appearance at the big-league level earlier this year, but has mostly been plugging along amiably in Colorado Springs. Lately, though, the 22-year-old has been making a lot of noise. He’s hitting .432 with more walks (5) than strikeouts (4) in his last 10 games. He has also stolen three bases. Just a torrid stretch at the plate — perhaps only being outdone by his teammate Domingo Santana.
We pretty much know what Sardinas is at this point in his career. He’s at least a solid utility infielder in the majors; however, the Brewers hope he can be a kind of Alcides Escobar Lite player — a guy who hits .280+ (occasionally a bit higher) with plus-defense and 20-ish stolen bases. It might be an optimistic hope for Sardinas, but the switch hitter is raking in the Pacific Coast League and will likely get his chance to impress in September.
