Prospect of the Day:  RHP Johnny Hellweg, Brevard County

It’s been a long recovery for Hellweg, who underwent Tommy John surgery last year. He recently made headlines with a velocity spike into the high-90s — effectively his pre-surgery velocity — yet the results haven’t followed in the same suit. In fact, I recently wrote an article that advocated moving Hellweg to the bullpen and grooming him to be a late-inning reliever, all in an effort to craft an elite relief corps for the Brewers and potentially shortcut their rebuilding process.

On Thursday, though, the 6-foot-7 hurler tossed seven strong innings, allowing a single run while striking out four. He induced 10 ground outs, compared to a mere five fly outs. All in all, it was precisely what the club wants Hellweg to be — a fireballing ground-ball machine who can overwhelm hitters and generate a few whiffs along the way. Neither his breaking stuff nor his command has been polished enough to get the kind of strikeouts his velocity would otherwise suggest.

I’m not certain the Brewers plan to develop Hellweg as a starter going forward. This may just be a way to give the right-hander bulk innings, in order to rebuild his arm strength and his confidence. He may show up in camp as a reliever — like a couple years ago — and try to break camp with the big-league club. With his frame and huge fastball, he’ll get plenty of chances to impress, too.
