Prospect of the Day:  RHP Marcos Diplan

The final piece of the Yovani Gallardo trade, few baseball fans had heard of Marcos Diplan. In the end, though, his may be the name that Brewers fans remember most. He can push his fastball into the mid-90s and has the makings of a three-pitch repertoire with a developing curveball and changeup. His short stature (5-foot-10) makes some think he could be a reliever down the road. When the Brewers traded for Diplan, BP’s own Al Skorupa mentioned that he thought the right-hander was the best arm on his old DPL squad a couple years ago. And after this weekend’s debut in the Brewers’ org, a scout told me that he heard glowing reports about his outing and suggested that he could eventually become a top-100 prospect. The command remains a work-in-progress — as is the case with most 18-year-old pitchers — but the building blocks exist for a legit pitching prospect, something the Brewers desperately need.

NOTE:  Brewers’ first-round pick, Trent Clark, suffered a scary injury in Sunday night’s game in Arizona. He reportedly stumbled on the warning track as he ran back on a fly ball. He lost his balance and collided head-first into the wall. Clark lay in the outfield for 15 minutes before being carried off the field and taken away by a fire truck. He reportedly was moving and coherent afterward. We’ll try to update you with news as it’s available, but our best wishes are with Trent and his family.
