Prospect of the Day: 2B Franly Mallen, DSL Brewers
When the Brewers signed Nicolas Pierre and Franly Mallen in 2013 for (at that time) franchise-record signing bonuses, it signaled a renewed focus on top-end international prospects — something the Brewers had either shied away from or ignored, depending on your willingness to be charitable. Mallen was one of the top international shortstop prospects available in 2013. He made the “Prospects on the Rise” list for Baseball Prospectus prior to the 2014 season. Last year, at 17 years of age, Mallen hit .235/.326/.292 with a single home run and more CS (5) than SB (4). Scouting the box score in the Dominican Summer League is a fool’s errand; however, the fact that he struck out more than once per game and hit .235 with little power made it clear that Mallen’s development would be incredibly slow and abstract.
Things have improved this season, as he’s hitting .267/.339/.412 with 15 doubles and three homers in 42 games. He launched his third home run of the 2015 campaign on Tuesday. It extended his hitting streak to six games, over a stretch in which he’s raised his batting average almost 10 points. Without getting eyes on Mallen or having access to anyone on the ground in the Dominican Republic, it’s impossible to know what has changed in the young man’s game. Still, it always feels better, as a fan, when hyped teenagers make statistical improvements from year-to-year. Mallen has certainly done that, and it will make his likely transition to the states in 2016 that much more intriguing.
