Prospect of the Day:  LHP Josh Hader, Biloxi

Overshadowed by Brett Phillips in the Carlos Gomez trade to Houston, left-hander Josh Hader enjoyed a sparkling debut on Tuesday evening. He struck out nine and only allowed two baserunners in five innings of work, needing only 73 pitches to secure his first Southern League victory. The comp most associated with Hader is “Chris Sale” due to his funky delivery and fastball that can touch 97-98 mph early in starts — even Phillips dropped a Sale comp in an interview on Tuesday — but that hardly seems fair or accurate to place on a 21-year-old.

The biggest concern with Hader is that he’s listed at only 160 pounds. His delivery and slight stature will make it difficult to hold up over a long season. Even last year, splitting time between High-A and Double-A in the month of August, he posted an ERA over 6.00 — suggesting that his body may not be able to handle the stress of 30+ starts year after year. If that’s the case and he moves to the bullpen, Hader could be a power reliever at the back-end of a bullpen. That seems to be the safest projection; however, the Brewers will continue to develop him as a starter. Because if that somehow works, the Gomez/Fiers trade could look like a coup for Melvin and his staff.
