Prospect of the Day: 1B Matt Clark, Colorado Springs
Clark may not be a “prospect,” in the conventional sense of the term, but going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, home run number 15, a walk, and four runs batted in is a great night at the plate. The 28-year-old is currently enjoying a tremendous run of performance. Over his past 10 games, he’s hitting .436 with two home runs and nine RBI. That stands in stark contrast to his horrendous summer, in which he barely eclipsed the Mendoza Line and had an OBP under .300.
Matt Clark is the son of former major-league pitcher Terry Clark, who was drafted by the Cardinals in 1979 and pitched portions of six seasons in the bigs. He broke into the league in 1988 with the California Angels, but ultimately appeared on seven clubs — the Angels, Astros, Braves, Orioles, Royals, Indians, and Rangers. He appeared in 91 games (27 starts) and compiled a career 5.54 ERA. His son stands about three inches higher and 40 pounds heavier, though, and has developed into a quality high-minors slugger. Matt Clark probably profiles as a Quad-A player who could be in the conversation at first base — along with Jason Rogers — if the Brewers trade Adam Lind this winter.
