Prospect of the Day:  OF Trent Clark, AZL Brewers

Not a stellar day for the Brewers’ farm system on Tuesday, but first-rounder Trent Clark continues to rake for the AZL club. He went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and is now hitting .325/.419/.468 on the year with 11 extra-base hits and 13 stolen bases. His 12.1 percent walk rate also shows the maturity of his approach, especially for an 18-year-old kid making his professional debut. In the end, one can easily understand why Ray Montgomery said after the draft that Clark is “a prodigal hitter.” The young man can barrel the baseball with regularity and has a nice idea of the strike zone, two wonderful attributes to possess at 18.

Ultimately, the question comes down to whether Trent Clark can stick in center field defensively, or if his power will develop enough to carry a corner-outfield profile. Scouts do not think center field is his long-term home; however, I do think it’s possible for Clark to develop and compile double-digit homers on an annual basis down the road. For guys who rely on quality hit tools, power often develops later. The .143 ISO is far from dismal, though. It’s admittedly a long journey from Maryvale to Miller Park, but the building blocks for an above-average major leaguer are present. And that, in itself, is exciting.
