Prospect of the Day:  SS Jake Gatewood, Helena

After struggling with the Timber Rattlers this spring, Gatewood has been one of Helena’s better hitters. He’s enjoying a torrid stretch at the plate, hitting .325 over his last 10 games and raising his slash line to .262/.317/.465 with 20 doubles and six homers. He’s hitting for power and perhaps hitting for a bit better average than we anticipated — though he’s still under what we’d consider “adequate” in the hit tool. After all, he’s still striking out over 30 percent of the time in rookie ball. Although that’s an improvement over his Class-A numbers, it’s not a quality sign. The good news is that Gatewood is only 19 years old and is making adjustments at the plate. He’s mentioned numerous times this summer how he’s learning to play baseball and trying to implement quality mechanics, rather than put on a power show in batting practice.

In short, the power numbers may be enticing, but the California native is far from a polished product. He’s going to require a ton of patience. At 6-foot-5 with long limbs, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever become a plus hitter at the dish. But he doesn’t have to hit .300 or even .275 at the big-league level. His hit tool simply needs to be good enough to allow him to tap into his deep reservoir of power. If he can hit .240 with 20+ homers — essentially what Khris Davis is doing — that would be an overwhelming win for the organization. Many scouts had written off Gatewood before he even signed a pro contract with the Brewers, suggesting that he’d never learn to hit. He’s doing his best to disprove that, showing glimpses of promise, but it’s not going to be quick and it’s not going to be painless. All in all, though, this has been a very positive season for the Brewers’ second pick in the 2014 draft.
