Prospect of the Day:  C Carlos Leal, Wisconsin

The Brewers drafted Leal in the 34th round of last year’s draft out of a small school in Mississippi, drafting him as a pitcher, a position he had never played before. The organization coveted his arm. He reportedly threw 95 mph in a pre-draft workout for the Brewers, and the team had designs on moving him permanently to the mound. After some struggles in his pro debut and voicing a strong desire to return to catching, Leal has caught fire for Class-A Wisconsin, hitting .322/.384/.422 with just 40 strikeouts in 54 games.

Leal continues to turn heads with his arm behind the plate, gunning down 31 percent of potential base stealers, but his bat is beginning to garner some attention, too. The Puerto Rican native has 16 extra-base hits on the season and has displayed an ability to drive the ball to all fields. In fact, his lone home run of the season was an opposite-field shot to left. Over the last 10 games, he has really stepped on the gas. He’s hitting .390 with 10 RBI and just six strikeouts over that timeframe. The 24-year-old is riding a five-game hitting streak and has gotten on base in 15-consecutive contests.

Not bad for a guy that nobody even wanted to draft as a hitter.
