Prospect of the Day: RHP Miguel Diaz, AZL Brewers
Diaz finished the 2014 with a lot of helium, touching the mid-90s with his fastball and breaking the top-10 prospect list for Baseball Prospectus. He has been sidelined, though, with an undisclosed injury that has kept him on the 7-day DL for the majority of the season. Sunday evening marked his first competitive outing of 2015.
His debut was ultimately unexciting, throwing a couple of innings without any runs, walks, or strikeouts. ESPN’s Eric Longenhagen attended the game and noted that Diaz sat 93-95 mph with his fastball and featured a below-average changeup with a “more relievery” delivery than last year. The temptation is to take that scouting report and attach it to Diaz as what he “is” this season, but Diaz hasn’t thrown much this season and certainly hasn’t seen competition. One should expect him to take a few starts to really settle in. Thus, while it’s nice to get eyes on Diaz, don’t worry about the below-average changeup or the high-effort delivery at this point. He’s 20 years old and has thrown two innings in 2015. He needs time to return to his 2014 levels — which isn’t a guarantee, but simply a note that a pitcher needs more than two innings to develop a rhythm and re-discover trust in a feel pitch like a changeup. It’s just encouraging to see the right-hander back on the mound.
