Prospect of the Day:  1B Garrett Cooper, Brevard County

As a first baseman taken in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Auburn, Cooper immediately became saddled with comparisons to Hunter Morris — who, at that time, threatened to crack the Brewers’ major-league roster and was a former Player of the Year in the Brewers’ organization. In his second go-round at Brevard County, it appears that he’s gotten his feet under him a bit more. He’s hitting .295/.359/.435 with six homers and 27 doubles on the year, and he’s even hitting .289 against lefties, which has historically been a significant issue for the 6-foot-6 slugger.

Of course, Cooper is 24 years old (with a birthday on Christmas Day) and is repeating High-A. He should be mashing these pitchers — many of whom are at least two years younger than him. Until he’s able to produce lofty numbers in Double-A, his prospect needle isn’t moving much. With that said, he’s hitting .471 over his last 10 games and has been a force for the Brevard County Manatees this year. That absolutely is valuable for a baseball organization, even if it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s an up-and-coming prospect.

What is the scoop on Otano? Worth keeping an eye on or not?

J.P. Breen

It’s a good question, and I admittedly don’t know much about Otano. I’ve sent out a couple feelers to contacts to get information. Nothing to this point. Unlike guys such as Yerison Pena, who is 24 years old and beating up on 17 and 18 year olds, Otano is 18 and in his first professional season. We’ll likely get a better feel for the organization’s opinion of him next year, based on where he’s placed.

Man I hope he is legit, because he has an amazing name.
