Prospect of the Day:  OF Domingo Santana, Colorado Springs

Plus-power remains a prized commodity in today’s game, and Santana has it for days. He has the kind of potential game-power that could translate into 30+ homers; however, the hit tool could limit its utility. The 23-year-old is susceptible to velocity on the inner half and can get exposed by soft stuff away. Fans may look at his .322 batting average in Triple-A this year and think that concern may be overstated, but he struck out 17 times in 14 big-league games this year and 14 times in just six big-league games a year ago. Whenever he does make The Show for an extended period of time, it’s going to require patience from the player, the organization, and the fan base.

Santana probably profiles best in left field, though he does have the arm for right. With Ryan Braun entrenched in right field and Khris Davis a very similar player in left, the question becomes where/how Santana will play. There has been speculation that Davis will be moved this offseason to make room for Santana, but there won’t be any tangible evidence to that end for several months. Santana doesn’t have much else to prove in Triple-A. He needs time in the majors and an environment in which he can make mistakes without having to worry about losing his playing time. A rebuilding club, like Milwaukee, offers a wonderful opportunity, it would seem.
